Learning To Learn Preschool

Listed
Rohnert Park, CAAges 2-5

Learning to Learn has been part of early childhood education in Sonoma County for more than 40 years. Our founders, two educators with teaching degrees, have since passed, and their children now run the schools they built. Our Rohnert Park school on Medical Center Drive cares for children from infancy to age 5 and is open year-round from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with full-time and part-time schedules. Our play-based curriculum covers academic, social, emotional and physical growth, and our older preschoolers prepare for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten through structured learning time, art and outdoor play. Teachers help children name their feelings, talk through conflicts and ask for help when they need it. Many of our teachers and office staff have been with us for years. We enroll year-round, so families often join the waitlist ahead of time. For school-age siblings, our affiliate Redwood Country Kids Club offers before and after-school care for children in TK through 8th grade. We are a state-licensed child care center.

Pathways Charter School

Listed
Rohnert Park, CAGrades K-12

Pathways Charter School gives TK–12 students across Sonoma, Solano, Napa, and Marin counties a free public independent-study option. Its main office occupies Suite C at 150 Professional Center Drive in Rohnert Park; the Rohnert Park Learning Center uses Suites D–F at the same address. Families, students, and credentialed independent-study teachers shape each learning plan together. In TK–5, parents or guardians guide much of the learning at home with teacher support. Students in grades 6–12 take more responsibility and can combine home study with online or learning-center classes. Community-vendor courses, co-ops, field trips, and regional learning centers broaden the options. Pathways also offers reading and math interventions, A–G-approved high-school courses, and concurrent community-college enrollment. When an IEP requires on-site classes, the school can accommodate them.

Comparing school options in Rohnert Park

Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified's board policy commits the district to seek out and evaluate residents from birth to age 21 who may have disabilities. Its special education program serves enrolled students ages 3 to 22. For special education planning, the district's site links families to the Sonoma County SELPA, the countywide multidistrict SELPA administered by the Sonoma County Office of Education.

The district's rules spell out the timeline. Within 15 days of a referral, not counting breaks over five school days, the district develops a proposed evaluation plan, and you have at least 15 days to consent. Consent to evaluate is not consent to services. Eligibility and an IEP follow within 60 days of your consent. Children in preschool special education are reevaluated before kindergarten or first grade to see whether they still need services.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Rohnert Park

What if I disagree with Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified's evaluation?
Under the district's administrative regulation, you can ask for an independent educational evaluation at public expense, done by a qualified examiner who is not a district employee. You are entitled to one public-expense IEE each time the district does an assessment you disagree with. The district must either pay or go to due process to show its own evaluation was appropriate. Our IEP guide covers your rights.
Will my preschooler be reevaluated before kindergarten?
Yes. Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified's regulation says children with disabilities in a preschool program are reevaluated before entering kindergarten or first grade to decide whether they still need special education. Reevaluations otherwise happen every three years, and not more than once a year unless you and the district agree. Plan the kindergarten move at the spring IEP meeting. Our IEP prep checklist helps.
Can I propose a nonpublic school placement in Rohnert Park?
A parent can propose a publicly funded nonpublic school placement, but the IEP team decides. Under the district's regulation, if you propose one, the district may observe the proposed placement and, if your child is already there, observe your child. Bring reports and work samples that show why you think the placement fits, and ask the team to explain its decision in writing.
Who serves Rohnert Park infants and toddlers?
California's Department of Developmental Services lists North Bay Regional Center as serving Napa, Solano, and Sonoma counties, with a main line of 707-256-1182. Regional centers run Early Start for children under three. Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified's policy also covers Child Find from birth. Our early intervention guide explains Early Start and the move into preschool special education at age three.
