Abraxas High School is Poway Unified's continuation high school, built for students who need a smaller, more flexible setting than a traditional high school to earn their diploma. Most of our students are 16 or older and choose Abraxas with their families. We offer smaller classes, open entry and open exit, alternative ways to earn elective credits, a shortened day when appropriate and work-study options. California named us a Model Continuation School in 2020, and we are accredited by WASC. New students start in our Success Class, which covers study skills, stress management, conflict strategies and planning. Our counselors, school psychologist and a Mending Matters mental health therapist provide academic counseling, college and career guidance, and individual and group counseling. Our campus also houses the district's Adult Transition Program, which has served young adults with developmental disabilities since 1986. St. Michael's School serves Poway families from three-year-old preschool and four-year-old Pre-K through eighth grade. Valley Elementary opened in 1962 as one of the three original elementary schools in the heart of Poway, next door to the City Library, City Hall and the Community Center. A modernization gave us new kindergarten classrooms and a new library, and we serve about 700 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. We are a Dual Language Immersion school, offering a Spanish immersion program from kindergarten through fifth grade, and kindergarten runs a full day. As a Targeted Assistance Title I school, we provide daily small-group instruction for students who need extra help, with a literacy specialist coaching classroom teachers. Our Resource Specialist Program is staffed by a full-time resource specialist and a speech-language specialist, and a school psychologist is on campus two days a week. Identified gifted students receive differentiated instruction in their regular classrooms. Before and after school, students can join ESS child care, the district ASES program or an on-site homework club, and the Boys and Girls Club next door offers after-school care. Cal State San Marcos teacher candidates take classes on our campus and tutor our students.
