Rock Rose began in 2006 as a small study group of parents and teachers. The group grew into a nonprofit parent-child program in Escondido and a parent co-op kindergarten in Ramona before opening its first Fallbrook preschool and parent-child classes in 2009. Since 2013 we have run a combined preschool and kindergarten for children ages 2 to 6, with 4-day or 5-day enrollment. Our program is Waldorf-inspired and draws on LifeWays practices, teaching through head, heart and hands with play-based, developmentally appropriate activities rather than rote memorization. The week moves in a rhythm of long outside days and long inside days. Children tend our garden, help prepare lunch and nap at school. In 2021 we added Gum Tree Nature Camp, which spends full days outdoors in public parks, on farms and gardens, and on longer hikes. Families with younger children can join our Waldorf and RIE inspired Parent and Baby class, for infants to experienced walkers, or our Parent and Child class for crawlers up to age 3.5. Willow Tree started in 2015, when a group of parents and teachers created a Waldorf-inspired charter school in partnership with the Bonsall and Mt. Empire school districts. In the fall of 2018 we left the charter model and became Friends of Willow Tree, a nonprofit enrichment center. We offer Waldorf-inspired classes for homeschooling families with children in TK/kindergarten through 8th grade, grouped into TK/kindergarten, lower grades (1st to 5th), and middle grades (6th to 8th). Families can choose two-part days of morning main lesson enrichment, a la carte specialty classes, or block classes, and we also run summer programs. We are an approved community partner and vendor for independent study charter schools including Sage Oak, Sky Mountain, Compass, Pacific Coast Academy, and Cabrillo Point Academy. All participating families join our seasonal festivals and performances. We meet Monday through Thursday at our temporary location on Reche Road in Fallbrook while we develop our 14-acre permanent site.
