Atascadero Childrens Center

Listed
Atascadero, CAGrades PreK-5

Our story began in 1985, when Judy and Ted Young opened Cabbage Patch Preschool after noticing how little child care was available in the North County. Janice Stevens bought the business in 1989, wrote its curriculum around the slogan "Teaching is Love made Visible," and later purchased the 2-acre property and renamed it Atascadero Children's Center. In June 2022 two long-time employees took over ownership. We run three programs year round, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Building B houses our Toddler and Beginning Preschool program, with sensory play, outdoor climbing and help with potty training. Our two PreK classrooms use learning centers and the Pre-K Wonders reading program used by Atascadero Unified. Building A holds the School-Age Program for PreK through 5th grade, with homework help, journaling, cooking, science and arts and crafts. Our teachers drive school vans to and from Monterey Road, San Benito, San Gabriel and Santa Rosa schools, and we offer full-day care on district non-school days, winter and spring breaks, and a themed summer camp with field trips.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Atascadero

What are Atascadero Unified's Regional Classrooms?
They are special education classrooms run by AUSD for students with significant disabilities, open at no cost to students ages 3 to 22 who live in San Luis Obispo County. Options include early intervention preschools and classrooms for severe disabilities or emotional disturbance. The IEP team recommends placement. Our IEP guide explains that process.
How does a student get into the STEPS program?
A parent, legal guardian, professional, school district, or an agency such as Tri-Counties Regional Center can refer an adult student. AUSD reviews records or completes an educational assessment to confirm qualification, then holds an IEP meeting to plan the transition and set goals. The Special Education Program Coordinator is at 805-462-4230.
Who looks for children with disabilities in San Luis Obispo County?
The San Luis Obispo County SELPA runs Search and Serve to identify students with disabilities from birth through 21. That includes preschoolers, private school students, and infants and toddlers with solely low-incidence disabilities. If you have a concern, request an assessment in writing from your district. Our guide on how to request a special education evaluation can help.
What arrives after I request an assessment?
Within 15 days of a referral, the parent receives a notice of parental rights and a proposed assessment plan describing the tests the team proposes. The plan states that no IEP results without parental consent. After testing, an IEP team that includes you decides eligibility. Students with IEPs are reassessed at least every three years.
