Palmer, AK • Ages 0-6 • Free (public school)

Mat-Su Central School is a public school in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District, founded in 1972 to serve students in remote parts of the district. It has since grown into the largest school in the district, serving well over 2,000 students. Where traditional schools ask students to fit a set curriculum and schedule, Mat-Su Central builds the program around each student and family. Every family is partnered with an experienced, certified advisor who acts as a liaison between family choices and state requirements. Students access public education funding through an allotment that families direct toward the curriculum and instructional materials they choose, drawn from hundreds of online, textbook, and hands-on options plus vetted community instructional partners. On-site offerings include K-12 clubs, high school credit classes, comprehensive music and art programs, a school library, field trips, student worker positions, and community service projects. Students may also take classes or play sports at any neighborhood school in the district. Support services are available for students with an active IEP. The approach is parent-driven: the parent educator provides academic support, while a full-time speech-language pathologist on staff delivers speech and language services on a mutually agreed schedule. Other specialty services such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, adapted PE, and counseling are provided at the neighborhood school. Special education advisory teachers serve elementary and secondary students, helping families with resources, curriculum decisions, and quarterly progress reporting on IEP goals. Mat-Su Central is a trauma-sensitive school with a comprehensive counseling team, and Project Childfind screening is available free for children from birth to age five.
