Malcolm Shabazz City High School is a public alternative high school on Madison's north side, connected to Sherman Middle School at 1601 North Sherman Avenue. Students in grades 9 to 12 from anywhere in the Madison Metropolitan School District apply to join us each semester, and when eligible applicants outnumber openings, places are filled by lottery. Much of our learning happens outside the classroom. Our schedule is built around project-based learning, community-based experiential education, outdoor adventure education and service learning, with van trips to places like the International Crane Foundation. Most classes last a semester, many are multi-age and interdisciplinary so students can earn credit in more than one subject, and grades are reported as Pass or No Credit along with a written Student Growth Summary for each class. Students complete the district's 22 required credits. Our student support team includes a full-time school counselor and school social worker, a school psychologist, a special education chair who develops IEPs, and a behavior education assistant. Students with disabilities receive case management, English learners work with a bilingual resource teacher and specialist, and a trained support dog named Enzo helps students regulate.
