Children reading a book together on a classroom rug at Sikora Montessori

Sikora Montessori

Wheeling, WV Grades PreK-5
Montessori Private school

Sikora Montessori has been Wheeling's Montessori preschool for more than 16 years. Our trained Montessori teachers follow the Montessori method, with children working within a carefully structured classroom environment. Children start with practical life work in their first two years: pouring, sorting, sewing, fruit slicing, sweeping, and folding, which build independence and fine motor coordination. Sensorial materials such as the pink tower, geometric cabinet, and color tablets lead into math with the Montessori golden beads, and reading grows from listening games and word building. By the kindergarten year, readers range from early phonetic reading to studying the parts of speech. A monthly theme ties the curriculum together, and children also study geography, flags of other countries, music, art, botany, and zoology. Families share snack duty under our nut-free guidelines, and a summer session follows the spring semester. Enrollment runs through a waitlist.

Wheeling Country Day School

Wheeling, WV Grades PreK-8
Private school

Wheeling Country Day School is an independent private school in Wheeling, West Virginia, established in 1929 and serving toddlers through middle school across a main campus and a separate middle school campus. Programs run from PLAYgroups for the youngest children (Little Explorers and Wonder 2gether) through preschool, junior and senior kindergarten, elementary grades one through five, and middle school grades six through eight. The early childhood program is centers-based and hands-on, matching the way young children develop, and the individualized approach supports a range of learners, including children who are neurodiverse. Around 45 percent of the student body receives need-based tuition assistance, and scholarship decisions are made separately from admissions. A summer camp runs each year.
