Washington School for the Deaf

Washington School for the Deaf (WSD) is Washington’s only ASL-English bilingual state school, serving deaf and hard-of-hearing students in Pre-K through 12th grade. Established in 1886, WSD provides an inclusive, student-centered, and culturally rich environment where students are challenged with vigorous and comprehensive academics aligned with Common Core State standards. The school serves students with any degree of hearing loss documented by an audiogram, fostering a community where communication is fully accessible and never a barrier.

The school's instructional approach is rooted in a bilingual model where American Sign Language (ASL) and English are both used for instruction. This commitment supports the development of ASL receptive and expressive skills alongside English reading and writing, and spoken English when appropriate. Small classroom settings and certified teachers in both Deaf Education and their specific subject areas ensure that each student's linguistic and cognitive development is fully supported.

For students residing outside the Vancouver area, WSD offers a structured and nurturing residential program. Students live in cottages during the week, where they develop independent living skills, receive academic assistance, and participate in a wide range of after-school activities and athletics. The residential department is dedicated to the safety and well-being of students, providing a family-like environment that encourages social, moral, and physical growth.

WSD also features the Washington Career Academy for the Deaf (WaCAD), a program for young adults ages 18 to 22. WaCAD focuses on employment readiness, independent living skills, and college support, helping students transition successfully into adulthood. As a state-funded agency, WSD provides its educational and residential programs at no cost to families, ensuring that all eligible deaf and hard-of-hearing youth in Washington have access to a specialized, language-rich education.

Therapeutic and support services at WSD are comprehensive, including speech-language pathology, audiology, occupational therapy, and school counseling. The campus facilities have recently expanded to include a new academic building and gymnasium, centering the Deaf experience in its design. Family partnership is central to the WSD experience, with staff working closely with parents to support each child's unique learning journey and transition needs.
