Childrens School & Montessori

Kenmore, WAGrades PreK-5

Bobbi Jakubiak and Mary Carlson started Children's School and Montessori in 1993 so their own children and their neighbors' children could share a preschool close to home. We are still a neighborhood school, north of Seattle where Lake Forest Park, Brier, Bothell, and Kenmore meet. We serve children from age two and a half through kindergarten in full-time and part-time programs. Our curriculum combines classic Montessori teaching with established early childhood education principles, so children learn to solve problems on their own and as part of a group while building self-confidence, respect, and cooperation. During the school year, families choose from several schedule options, and our kindergartners can stay for before and after school care. Over the years our founders have added a small team of educators to the school, which stays large enough to keep children challenged and small enough for every family to know the teachers well.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Kenmore

How does a Northshore referral work?
A referral is a written request for evaluation that explains why a student might need special education. Parents, extended family, teachers, medical professionals, or agencies can start one with any staff member at the school. It goes to the school Guidance Team or school psychologist, and the team decides within 25 school days whether to evaluate. Our evaluation request guide helps you write it.
My child attends a private school outside Kenmore. Who evaluates?
It depends on the school. A student at a nonprofit private school is referred through the district where that school is located, which may differ from your home district. A student at a for-profit private school is referred through the district of residence. In both cases, if your child qualifies, IEP services come from your district of residence.
What is an Individual Service Plan?
An ISP describes the special education or related services a district will provide to an eligible student whose parents voluntarily enrolled them in a private school. Northshore explains that qualifying private school students can use an ISP instead of receiving services through an IEP. Ask how the services compare before you choose. Our IEP guide explains what a full IEP includes.
How many school days does a Northshore evaluation take?
After you give written consent, Washington gives the district 35 school days to evaluate and decide eligibility, unless you agree to a different period that the district documents. During the referral stage, the district may gather medical, therapy, or school records, and it needs your consent to get records from outside the district. Organize them with our IEP prep checklist.
