Futurus High School

Listed
Centralia, WAGrades 9-12Tuition-free

Futurus High School is a small public alternative learning experience (ALE) in the Centralia School District, built for students who want smaller classes, more time with teachers and a quicker route to graduation. Most of our students are juniors and seniors, and many earn more than three credits a semester, which lets them graduate early or on time. Our diploma and transcript carry no alternative-school label. FHS is a hybrid program. Students work in APEX online courses and attend in person for at least half a day, choosing a morning or afternoon session, so teachers can help face to face. Our fully virtual option, FVS, is open to students in grades 9 to 12 through a separate application and requires a weekly check-in with an advisory teacher. Each student follows an individualized pathway to graduation with an emphasis on career or college choice, and we put a special focus on personal finance. Futurus students can still play district sports, join music programs and attend school dances. The district provides transportation, with drop-off at Centralia Middle School, where students walk over. We enroll students from Centralia and from surrounding districts.

Comparing school options in Centralia

Centralia School District evaluates children ages 3 to 5 for possible delays in language, motor, cognitive, or social-emotional development, at no cost. Preschool screenings are scheduled three to four times a year. To refer a preschooler or ask questions, call the Special Services Department at 360.330.7601. Infants and toddlers living in the Centralia or Chehalis school districts are evaluated through a separate birth-to-3 program.

For school-age students ages 5 through 22, a parent, staff member, or outside person may refer a student at the local school. Contact the school psychologist at your child's school or the district's special education department, and use the district's Special Education Referral Form, offered in English and Spanish. All evaluations are free. A family living in a temporary situation can ask the district where they are staying for a screening. Centralia also posts its Child Find notice in English and Spanish.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Centralia

What happens after I send a referral?
The district gathers existing information, including anything you provide, medical records, and how your child does at school or in other settings. Washington then gives it 25 school days to decide whether to evaluate. If it declines, it must send Prior Written Notice with its reasons, and you can challenge the decision or ask about Section 504. Our 504 plan vs IEP guide compares the two.
How long does the evaluation itself take?
Once you sign written consent, Washington law gives the district 35 school days to evaluate your child and decide eligibility. A different timeline is allowed only if you agree and the district documents the reasons. Mark the date you signed so you can track it. Our IEP guide explains what happens if your child qualifies.
Do I have to attend a referral meeting?
Washington does not require a referral meeting. If the district does schedule one, it must invite you. Either way, send your referral in writing to a school staff member involved in special education and to the district's special education director, and keep a copy. Our evaluation request guide shows what to include.
Where can I get a developmental screening before age 3?
Washington's Early Support for Infants and Toddlers program serves children from birth to 3 with developmental delays or disabilities, at home, in child care, or in the community. The Help Me Grow Washington hotline, 1-800-322-2588, offers free developmental screening for children under 5 and connections to local services. Our early intervention guide covers the first steps.
