KEYS Academy Augusta opened in August 2018 as the third KEYS Academy school and moved to its current site in Verona in June 2023. The Commonwealth of Virginia licenses our private day special education school, which has 27 seats spanning elementary, middle and high school. Students come to us from Augusta, Nelson and Rockingham counties and the cities of Charlottesville, Waynesboro, Harrisonburg and Staunton. Students are ages 5 to 22 in grades K to 12, with classifications of Emotional Disability, Autism, Other Health Impairment, Specific Learning Disability or Speech/Language impairment. No class goes above 10 students. There is one staff member for every three students, and each class has a certified special education teacher and/or paraprofessional. Instruction follows the Virginia Standards of Learning through a blended model that uses Wilson Reading System, Fundations, Lexia and Edmentum, with IEP accommodations and high school credit recovery. Social skills, problem solving and planning toward each student's BIG Life goal come from Social Thinking and the KEYS curriculum. Students also get art, music activities such as drum circles, daily physical activity, and free lunch and snacks.
