KEYS Academy – Caroline

KEYS Academy opened its Caroline County campus in August 2020, our fourth Virginia school, in response to interest from Caroline County and the surrounding communities. The campus is a state-licensed private day school with 32 seats for special education students in kindergarten through 12th grade, ages 5 to 22, placed by public school divisions including Caroline, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Henrico and Hanover.

Each room has at most 10 students, a 1:3 staff-to-student ratio, and a certified special education teacher or paraprofessional. We serve students classified with emotional disability, autism, other health impairment, specific learning disability and speech/language needs. Instruction blends teacher-led lessons with digital courseware such as Edmentum, Wilson Reading System, Fundations, Lexia and Reflex Math, and high schoolers can recover credits.

Our person-centered KEYS curriculum and Social Thinking lessons work on social skills and problem solving, and help each student plan toward a BIG Life goal. Students also get art, daily physical activity, and free lunch and snacks.
