About KEYS Academy – Charlottesville
KEYS Academy Charlottesville opened in August 2015 to meet growing local need, and a multi-classroom addition in 2019 raised our capacity from 25 to 32 seats. Our private day school holds a Virginia license to serve special education students ages 5 to 22, in grades K through 12, from Charlottesville City and Albemarle, Nelson, Louisa and Fluvanna counties.
We cap classes at 10 students, with one staff member for every three students and teachers certified in special education. We serve students with emotional disabilities, autism, other health impairments, specific learning disabilities and speech or language impairments. Blended instruction pairs teacher-led lessons with Edmentum courseware, Wilson Reading System, Fundations, Lexia and Reflex Math, all aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning, and high schoolers can recover credits.
Our social skills lessons draw on Social Thinking and the KEYS curriculum, which also cover problem solving and planning for the future. Students get regular physical activity and art at every grade level, and music experiences such as drum circles. Lunch and snacks are free, and the daily rate is $332.
