For 50 years, The Schoolhouse has been a progressive, nonprofit independent school in South Burlington, open to children from age 2 through 8th grade. We run three programs: Story Time Preschool for ages 2 to 4, an elementary school with three multi-age classrooms (Alphas for pre-K through 1st grade, Taus for 2nd and 3rd, Sophos for 4th and 5th), and a middle school. Children learn through an integrated curriculum driven by their own questions, with problem-solving work in place of tests. The preschool is play and nature based, and every age uses our 28-acre campus for environmental science and sustainability study. Anti-bias and anti-racist teaching starts with the youngest groups. We are a State of Vermont Approved Independent School, a 5-STARS program and a prequalified prekindergarten program, so preschool families can use Act 166 funding. Elementary and middle school families can apply for needs-based financial aid. We are a general education school and do not provide special education services, though we offer accommodations such as extra time, assistive technology and flexible seating.
