Overview
Some kids are clearly bright but still struggle in a regular classroom, often getting by only with hours of tutoring or constant help at home. The Joy School is for them. We are a K-8 independent school in Houston for curious, capable children who learn differently, including those with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, language disorders, social pragmatic challenges, anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, and executive-functioning differences.
With about 160 students, we group children by the kind of teaching they need rather than forcing one curriculum on everyone, and we trust our teachers to make the right calls for the kids in front of them. Small classes are central to how we work, with student-to-teacher ratios around 6:1 and 8:1 so every child gets real attention.
Since 1997, we have cared as much about how a student feels about themselves as about their reading or math. We build self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-advocacy, and most of our students move on to other schools within three to five years, leaving as confident, independent learners who no longer need specialized support.
