River Rock Academy has run alternative and special education programs in Pennsylvania since 2005, and our Shiremanstown campus on South Locust Street is one of 12 River Rock campuses across the state. We are a Pennsylvania Department of Education approved licensed academic school and private provider, and every student comes to us through a referral from their home school district. Our programs cover elementary regular and special education students in grades K to 6 who need added behavioral support, secondary special education for grades 7 to 12, and Alternative Education for Disruptive Youth in grades 6 to 12. Special education students in our licensed academic programs have an emotional disturbance or learning disability classification. Each student has a primary counselor, individual and group counseling, social skills work and a daily therapeutic classroom setting, along with an individualized goal plan and transition plan for returning to public school. Online programs support credit recovery and PSSA or GED preparation, recreation is built into the school day, and eligible students can join co-op community work experiences. High school credits transfer to the home district, which awards the diploma. Supplies are provided.
