About Cray Challenges
Cray Challenges is the alternative education program of Cray Youth & Family Services in New Castle, built for students in grades 7 to 12 who struggle to meet public school expectations. The program is highly structured and works on students' emotional and social needs alongside their academics, giving young people who have not succeeded in a traditional school setting another path forward.
Referrals come from contracted school districts in Lawrence County, so families start the process with their home district. Cray began in 1984 as a boys' group home and has grown into a family services agency that works with more than 500 Lawrence County youth and families each year.
Our agency also runs the Cray Education Center, a Pennsylvania Department of Education licensed private academic school with room for 60 students. It offers a special education school for grades 4 to 12 serving students with learning and emotional support needs, plus a regular education program for grades 4 to 8. District referrals place students there as well.
