About Charlotte Mecklenburg Academy
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Academy is the only public separate school in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools serving students with behavioral and emotional needs, so we enroll students in kindergarten through 12th grade from across the county. Every student is placed with us through the IEP process, and students move back to less restrictive settings when they are ready.
Our classrooms are small and highly structured, with specially designed instruction and social, emotional and behavioral support built into the day. We use the Boys Town Specialized Classroom Management model school-wide: students learn specific life skills, earn points through a token economy, and move from Daily Points to Progress Points to Merit Points as their self-management grows. Our staff includes exceptional children teachers, behavior support coordinators and technicians, counselors, an adapted physical education teacher and a job coach.
High school students can take career and technical education courses in graphics and digital design, web development and business education. CMA sits just north of Center City, operates a schoolwide Title I program, and is part of the CMS Programs for Exceptional Children.
