The Center for Developmental Disabilities 853 School
NYSED-approved private special education day school (Chapter 853)
Woodbury, NY • Ages 5-22 • Classroom staffing ratios of 6:1:2 or 9:1:3 ratio
The Center for Developmental Disabilities operates a 12-month Children's Day Program, its 853 School, for students ages 5 to 22 who have an educational classification of autism, intellectual disability, or multiple disabilities. Students are referred through their home district when their Individualized Education Program goals and educational needs cannot be met in their current placements. Classrooms are kept small, with staffing ratios of 6:1:2 or 9:1:3, so instruction can be individualized. The academic curriculum spans English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, complemented by a Vocational Education Program that builds daily living and social skills. Enrichment is woven throughout the school day through adapted physical education, art, and music programs designed to foster self-esteem, communication, and overall growth. The mission is to increase each student's independence so they can participate more fully in their community.
