About Oakwood Friends School
Founded in 1796, Oakwood Friends School was the first coeducational college preparatory school in New York State, and we have operated as a Quaker school ever since. Today we enroll boarding and day students in grades 6 to 12 on a 55-acre campus in Poughkeepsie, about 90 minutes by train from Grand Central. Students come from across the U.S. and more than a dozen countries, and our classes stay small.
Our Academic Support Center serves students diagnosed with mild to moderate learning differences, ADD/ADHD or autism spectrum disorders, with full-time faculty trained in LD education. Learning Skills is a full-year class, generally one teacher to two students, for students with documented learning differences. Focused Instruction caps sections at five and targets organization and time management. Both are built into the regular schedule, and students meet the same graduation requirements as their peers.
Quaker testimonies shape daily life: every student does community service, and seniors design an independent service project. We offer 5-day and 7-day boarding, an ESL and international program, global affairs and leadership programs, the arts, athletics and college counseling. About 72% of families receive need-based financial aid.
