Birch Family Services, Inc. - Early Childhood The Springfield Gardens Education Center

Listed
Jamaica, NYGrades PreK-5

Our Springfield Gardens Education Center in Southeast Queens serves preschoolers ages 3 to 5 and school-age children ages 5 to 11 with special needs. Many of our students have developmental disabilities involving cognition and speech delays, social-emotional concerns or autism. Most of our staff live in the neighborhood or nearby towns. Preschool families can choose among special classes of 8 to 12 students, integrated special classes of 15 to 18 students, Universal Pre-K, and full-day Head Start for three- and four-year-olds. Our school-age program runs three special classes of 8 students. Classrooms use literacy-based programs, visual supports, technology and social-emotional instruction, and children receive speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and counseling or play therapy as related services. The center is part of Birch Family Services, a nonprofit founded in 1975 that supports more than 2,000 people with autism and developmental disabilities at 31 locations in New York City. Parent events, trainings and family resources are part of our program, and the building is reachable by the Q3, Q111, Q113 and Q114 buses and the LIRR.

P.S. Q224

Listed
Jamaica, NYGrades PreK-12Tuition-free

P.S. Q224 is a District 75 school within New York City Public Schools, serving students from pre-K through 9th grade along with ungraded special education classes. Our classes meet at six sites in Queens: the main site at 252-12 72nd Avenue, a fully accessible building, plus sites in Bayside, Glen Oaks, Flushing and Jamaica. Our guiding belief is that each student, based on individual needs, gets the chance to become as independent as possible every day. Lessons are targeted and differentiated, students get immediate feedback and chances to assess their own work, and non-internet devices written into a student's IEP or 504 plan are used as part of instruction. Students wear school uniform shirts, and after a school-wide vote we became the P224Q Owls. A student council, Citizens of the Month recognition and a school comfort dog are part of daily life. Bus transportation is arranged through the district's contracted bus companies, and free breakfast and lunch are served.

Comparing school options in Jamaica

New York City routes special education referrals through 11 Committees on Special Education (CSE) and Committees on Preschool Special Education (CPSE). If you live in District 28 or 29, your office is CPSE/CSE 3 at 90-27 Sutphin Boulevard in Jamaica, phone 718-557-2724. District 27 families use the CPSE/CSE 4 office on Rockaway Boulevard in Ozone Park.

A Jamaica mailing address does not tell you your community school district, so look it up with the city's address tool before sending a referral. Preschoolers ages 3 to 5 are assigned to a CPSE by where they live. School-age students usually go to the CSE where they attend school, but home address controls for children who are homeschooled, attend school outside the city, or are not in school and have an IEP. Offices accept hand-delivered referrals weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Jamaica

What should a referral to the Queens CSE or CPSE include?
Describe your concerns about your child's development, learning, or behavior, and state that you are requesting a special education evaluation. When emailing the office, include your child's first and last name and date of birth, any language support you need, and whether you are deaf or hard of hearing. The offices aim to respond to inquiries within 48 hours.
How long does an evaluation take in New York?
Under state regulation 200.4, the initial evaluation must be finished within 60 days of receiving your consent unless you and the CSE agree in writing to extend it. For a student not previously identified, the board of education must arrange recommended programs and services within 60 school days of consent. Our IEP guide explains what comes after eligibility.
We pay for a private school in Queens. Can my child still get services?
Yes, if you ask in time. New York City Public Schools must receive a written Notice of Intent at the CSE where the private school is located by June 1 before the school year in which you want services. Eligible students get an Individualized Education Services Plan (IESP). Homeschooling families face the same June 1 deadline for services.
How does a preschool evaluation work for a three-year-old in Jamaica?
After a referral to your CPSE, you receive a list of state-approved evaluation agencies, choose one, and sign consent for an evaluation at no cost to your family. Children leaving Early Intervention get help from their service coordinator with the referral. The CPSE then meets with you to review results and write an IEP if your child is eligible. See our early intervention guide.
