Little Garden by the Sea

Listed
Island Park, NYAges 2-5

Our children bake bread, tend an organic garden and play outdoors every day, rain included. Little Garden by the Sea is a Lifeways aligned nursery program in Island Park, and the North American Association for Environmental Education recognizes us as a nature preschool within its Natural Start Alliance. We are also members of the Child Care Council of Nassau. The morning program runs Monday through Friday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. for children 2.5 to 4 years old. Our approach draws on Waldorf education: rhythm, seasonal songs, storytelling, puppetry and free play with open-ended toys made of natural materials. We add Reggio Emilia inspired provocations that follow the children's interests, along with wet-on-wet watercolor painting. Snack is organic fruit with bread the children knead themselves, plus chamomile or lemon balm tea picked from our garden. Leftovers go to our worm compost, which in turn feeds the garden beds.

Our Learning Environment is a distinguished early childhood center dedicated to nurturing the growth and development of toddlers and preschoolers, particularly those with unique learning needs. Serving children aged 17 months to 4 years, the center is designed to support a diverse range of developmental challenges, including language-based learning disabilities. The curriculum emphasizes a blend of academic instruction and play-based learning, ensuring that each child engages in a structured yet flexible environment that promotes exploration and creativity. Under the guidance of Danielle Urrego, a New York State Certified School Psychologist and Special Education Teacher, the school implements innovative programs that prioritize intellectual stimulation through sensory experiences, movement, art, and storytelling. The Toddler Transition Class provides an ideal setting for younger children to gradually acclimate to a school environment, while the Clever Caterpillars and Brilliant Butterflies classes focus on fostering social skills, language development, and independence through thematic units tailored to their interests. What sets Our Learning Environment apart is its commitment to eco-friendly practices combined with a low student-teacher ratio that ensures personalized attention for each child. The center's endorsement from the Eco-Healthy Child Care Council reflects its dedication to providing a safe and healthy space for learning. Strong family partnerships are also emphasized, creating a supportive community where parents feel valued and engaged in their child's educational journey. Comparing school options in Island Park

Island Park Union Free School District calls itself the smallest school district in Nassau County, with its office at 150 Trafalgar Blvd. Small size means a short chain of contacts, but the rules are the same statewide. Island Park's own Committee on Special Education and Committee on Preschool Special Education handle referrals, and Nassau BOCES offers shared programs across 56 county districts.

Because Island Park is small, a child who needs a specialized class may be served through Nassau BOCES or another approved program, not only in town. That choice belongs to the Committee on Special Education, with you at the table, and the district pays. For preschoolers, the CPSE decides eligibility and Nassau County funds services with the State. Families of babies and toddlers start with Early Intervention, and the service coordinator helps with the referral to the district at age three.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Island Park

How do I ask Island Park schools to evaluate my child?
Send a written referral to the chairperson of the district's Committee on Special Education or to your child's principal. Describe your concerns and ask for an evaluation. Once you sign consent, New York gives the district 60 days to complete it. Our evaluation request guide walks through the letter.
Does Island Park run every special education program itself?
Not necessarily. As the smallest district in Nassau County, Island Park can use Nassau BOCES, which serves 56 districts and runs special education programs. If the committee recommends a state-approved private school, the district arranges it within 30 school days. Those placements come from the IEP team, not a parent request alone.
What preschool services can an Island Park three-year-old receive?
If the CPSE finds your child eligible, New York allows a special education itinerant teacher, an integrated special class, a special class, or related services like speech, occupational or physical therapy. Services can happen in a pre-K, Head Start program, child care setting or your home. The evaluation is free.
Will Island Park provide transportation to a preschool program?
If the CPSE recommends transportation, the county provides it once a day each way, up to 50 miles. Parents may be reimbursed for driving their own child when transportation is on the plan. No public transportation is provided when services happen at home or at a child care site you arranged.
