Comparing school options in Huntington

Huntington Union Free School District shares the Western Suffolk BOCES region with neighbors such as South Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor, Harborfields and Northport, so a Huntington mailing address does not settle which district serves you. In Huntington UFSD, the Committee on Special Education (CSE) decides placement, and the Board of Education reviews CSE recommendations before anything changes.

Huntington UFSD supports a range of services. Consultant teachers help students stay in full-time general education. A resource room provides a 5:1 group one period a day. Integrated co-teaching pairs a general and a special education teacher. Special classes run at 15:1:1 or 12:1+(3:1) ratios. The district's Director of Special Education and Student Support Services is reachable at 631-673-2115. Huntington belongs to Western Suffolk BOCES, which covers the towns of Babylon, Huntington and Smithtown.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Huntington

Which school district serves my Huntington address?
Check with the district by street address. Western Suffolk BOCES covers the towns of Babylon, Huntington and Smithtown and lists Huntington, South Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor, Commack, Elwood, Half Hollow Hills, Harborfields and Northport among its members. The district where you live runs your child's CSE and preschool committee, so start there.
What is the difference between resource room and co-teaching in Huntington?
Resource room is extra small-group instruction, five students to one teacher, one period a day, on top of your child's regular program. Integrated co-teaching puts a general education teacher and a special education teacher in the same classroom with students with and without IEPs. The CSE picks the service based on your child's needs.
Who approves a Huntington CSE recommendation?
The Board of Education reviews CSE recommendations before the district acts. New York requires the board to arrange services within 60 school days of your consent to evaluate. For a state-approved private school recommendation, the board has 30 school days after receiving it. Our IEP guide explains your role at the meeting.
Where does a Huntington toddler under three get help?
Suffolk County's Early Intervention Program serves children from birth to three. Call the county referral line at (631) 853-3100, and the evaluation is free. Near age three, the program helps you refer to your district's Committee on Preschool Special Education. Our early intervention guide covers that transition.
