The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is the state's school for students who are blind or visually impaired. It was founded as a land grant school in 1903 and opened three years later with 21 students, two teachers and a superintendent. The residential campus still sits on that original site on North White Sands Boulevard in Alamogordo, and the school marked 120 years of operation in 2026. NMSBVI is governed by its own Board of Regents rather than by a local district, and its remit covers the whole state. Alongside Alamogordo it runs a second campus in Albuquerque housing an Early Childhood Program and the school's statewide services, so a family does not have to live in Otero County to reach it.
