Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Mesquite

Are there special needs schools in Mesquite, NV?
Mesquite has no stand-alone special education school on this page. Children with disabilities here are served by the Clark County School District under an IEP or 504 plan, usually in their zoned school. At Hughes Middle, about one student in six had an IEP in 2021-22, so the building runs special education every day. In 2023-24 it enrolled 548 students with about 21 per teacher.
Which school district serves Mesquite for special education?
Mesquite addresses fall inside the Clark County School District, the same district that serves Las Vegas. Its Child Find Project evaluates preschool-age children not yet in school, plus school-age children in Clark County who are homeschooled or attend private schools. If your child already attends a CCSD school such as Hughes Middle, the evaluation happens at your zoned school, so start with a written request to that school.
How long does a special education evaluation take in Nevada?
Nevada's rule (NAC 388.337) gives the school 45 school days after you provide informed written consent to complete the initial evaluation, unless you and the school agree in writing to another timeline. The state superintendent can extend the deadline by up to 15 school days at the district's request. Whether you write to Hughes Middle or another zoned CCSD school, date your request, keep a copy, and note the day you sign consent so you can count forward.
What is Mesquite Christian Academy like?
Mesquite Christian Academy teaches kindergarten through eighth grade, takes new high school students on a limited basis, and uses a classical Christian model built on the trivium of grammar, dialectic and rhetoric, with Latin and a strong reading and writing focus. Federal data for 2021-22 listed 22 students and about 5.6 per teacher, a seven-hour day and a 180-day year. It is not a special education school, so ask how it adapts lessons and testing for a child with an IEP.
How much does private school cost in Mesquite?
Mesquite Christian Academy lists 2026-27 tuition of $6,800 a year for kindergarten through eighth grade, payable in ten monthly payments of $680 or at a 5 percent discount when paid in full. Siblings receive a 20 percent discount. Families drop by the office, submit an application packet, and attend a family interview, and placement testing may be required. Admission is decided case by case.
Can the Nevada Opportunity Scholarship help with private tuition?
It can if your household income is at or below 300 percent of federal poverty guidelines. The Opportunity Scholarship covers tuition, fees and transportation at a private school, and the Nevada Department of Education set the 2026-27 maximum at $10,367 per student. You apply through a registered Scholarship Granting Organization, not the state. Ask the organization whether funds remain for new students and whether your chosen school participates.
My child has dyslexia or ADHD. What help is there in Mesquite?
Nevada's dyslexia law has each district adopt an early literacy screening that checks phonological and phonemic awareness, and CCSD must give it to K-3 students who show signs of dyslexia and need intervention. If results or classroom struggles point to a learning disability, ask CCSD for a full evaluation. Federal rules place dyslexia under specific learning disability and ADHD under other health impairment, and a child who needs only accommodations can get a 504 plan.
Who helps babies and toddlers with delays in Mesquite?
Nevada Early Intervention Services works with children from birth until age three who have developmental delays or disabilities, and the evaluation is free. You can make the referral yourself or ask your pediatrician to do it, and the state's Project Assist line helps families connect. Once your child turns three, the Clark County School District takes over, so plan the handoff to CCSD Child Find a few months ahead.
