La Vista Middle School

Listed
La Vista, NEGrades 6-8Tuition-free

La Vista Middle School, home of the Monarchs, opened in 1976 as La Vista Junior High and today serves 7th and 8th graders in Papillion La Vista Community Schools. A 2023 bond project finished in August 2026 renovated our science classrooms, added a new counseling center and improved the track and field. When classes end, students can join clubs that include robotics, competition engineering, chess, debate, science, Spanish, writing, book club, Dungeons & Dragons, games, yearbook, student council and National Junior Honor Society, and musicians sing in show choir or play in jazz band. Unified Sports and Circle of Friends are part of the lineup too. Our 7/8 athletics program fields teams in football, volleyball, cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls wrestling, and track, with intramural basketball, volleyball and soccer. Students with disabilities receive IEP or Section 504 services through the district, which educates students alongside general education peers in their neighborhood school whenever possible and provides speech, occupational and physical therapy, school psychology and assistive technology as needed. We also use PBIS schoolwide.

La Vista West Elementary School

Listed
La Vista, NEGrades K-8Tuition-free

La Vista West Elementary, home of the Wolves, was funded by a 1963 bond issue to serve the growing west side of La Vista, and today we teach kindergarten through sixth grade in the Papillion La Vista Community Schools. The building was renovated in the mid-2000s and again through the 2018 bond, which added classrooms, a larger kitchen and safety and security upgrades. We were an early leader in inclusive education in the district. Papillion La Vista provides special education from birth to age 21, and students with IEPs learn alongside general education classmates as much as possible, with services such as speech therapy, occupational and physical therapy, school psychology, vision and hearing support and assistive technology delivered in the neighborhood school. Section 504 plans are also available. Students in the upper grades can join Craft Club, Music Club, Music Theater Club and Battle of the Books, and sixth graders play in a group band before school. We also offer Title I services and use PBIS for positive behavior schoolwide.

Comparing school options in La Vista

Papillion La Vista Community Schools (PLCS), the district that carries the city's name, offers free developmental screenings and evaluations for young children whose parents have concerns. Evaluations can take place at home or at the PLCS Early Childhood Center, and both parents are encouraged to take part. For questions about a young child's development, call the Early Childhood Center at 402-514-3243.

PLCS sorts early childhood referrals by age. If your child is already three, the district sends a parent questionnaire, and an Early Childhood Specialist contacts you after you return it. If your child is not yet three, a Services Coordinator calls to gather information and plan next steps. If your child qualifies, the team writes an IFSP or IEP with you, including placement and related services. District lines do not always follow city limits, so confirm which district serves your address.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in La Vista

What does a PLCS early childhood evaluation look like?
A team that may include several specialists assesses your child through play, formal tasks, and observation to build a full picture of development. You can stop the evaluation at any time if you have concerns. Afterward, the team meets with you to review results and decide whether your child qualifies. If not, they may give you strategies to use at home. Our early intervention guide explains what follows.
Who handles disability discrimination or 504 questions at PLCS?
PLCS names the Director of Student Services, 420 South Washington Street in Papillion, (402) 537-6200, as the contact for student inquiries about its non-discrimination policies, including disability. The district also posts Section 504 parental rights. A 504 plan covers accommodations for students who do not need specially designed instruction. Our 504 plan vs. IEP guide compares the two.
How long does the first early intervention evaluation take in Nebraska?
Nebraska's Early Development Network requires the evaluation, eligibility decision, assessment, and the first IFSP meeting within 45 calendar days of the referral. A delay can happen if your child is hospitalized or your family has other extenuating circumstances. Once you sign consent for services, they must start in a timely manner, for example within 30 days. Keep a dated note of when you made the referral.
When should transition planning start before age three?
Nebraska's family guide says the transition meeting should happen at least 90 days before your child's third birthday, and it can be held as early as 9 months before. At that meeting the team reviews program options, explains how your family will take part in the transition, and writes a transition plan with you. Ask PLCS to attend if your child may need preschool special education.
