Gateway Virtual Academy

Listed
Sikeston, MOGrades K-12Free for most Sikeston R-6 residents

Gateway Virtual Academy is the Sikeston R-6 School District's online school, open to any K-12 student living in Missouri. Families use it to attend school fully online, to add courses to a traditional school schedule, or, for high schoolers, to take classes their own district does not offer. Most students who live within the Sikeston R-6 district can take courses free of charge. Our elementary and middle school students use the Calvert curriculum, with step-by-step Learning Manuals and lesson plans that parents use to guide learning at home. Lessons in English language arts, math, science and social studies favor projects and real-world application over drills, with STEM skills built into labs and projects. In grades 6 to 8, students read classic literature, study physical, life and earth science, and explore world geography and culture. High school students choose from core and elective courses. Each lesson opens with a vocabulary activity and a video lecture from a certified teacher in that subject, followed by journal writing, lab simulations and other practice before an assessment.

Southeast Missouri Christian

Listed
Sikeston, MOAges 2-5$150 to $200 per month (half-day)

Southeast Missouri Christian Academy, known locally as SEMO Christian Academy, opened in August 1978 with a preschool class of six students and is Sikeston's original Christian academy. Over the years we offered kindergarten, elementary grades and even high school band and basketball, until a 1986 tornado destroyed much of our campus. Since our last kindergarten class in 2022-23, we have focused entirely on preschool. We are a nonprofit Christian school affiliated with Shady Acres Church of Christ, which shares our building on Ables Road. We take no federal, state or church funding, so tuition, fundraisers and donations keep us running. Bible reading, prayer and spiritual values are part of our curriculum alongside play and early learning. Families choose three half-days (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) at $150 a month or five half-days at $200 a month, plus an annual supply fee. Morning class runs from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m., early drop-off starts at 7:30 a.m., and our afternoon enrichment program keeps children until as late as 5:30 p.m. for working families. Children celebrate Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day parties and an Easter egg hunt each year.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Sikeston

Are there schools for autistic children in Sikeston, MO?
Sikeston has no stand-alone autism school on this page. Autistic students here usually learn in Sikeston R-6 buildings with an IEP that spells out their specialized instruction, therapies and supports. Missouri lists autism among its special education eligibility categories, so a diagnosis from a doctor helps, but the district still completes its own evaluation to decide what services your child needs at school.
Are there private schools for autism near Sikeston?
None of the Sikeston listings is a private autism school, so families who want one often look at what MOScholars can fund. The scholarship covers tuition at a qualified private school, educational therapies from a licensed or accredited provider, tutoring and curriculum, so a family can pair a local school with outside therapy. Ask any private school what training its staff have with autism before you commit.
What is Gateway Virtual Academy?
Gateway Virtual Academy is Sikeston R-6's own online school, run from the district office on Virginia Street, and it takes enrollment by semester. Any Missouri K-12 student can enroll fully online or add courses to a regular schedule, and Sikeston R-6 residents take courses free in most cases. Some students with anxiety, sensory overload or medical needs do well online; others lose the structure and peer practice a building gives them. Ask how the academy delivers IEP minutes, speech and occupational therapy to students at home.
What is SEMO Christian Academy like?
SEMO Christian Academy has served the Sikeston area since 1978. It is a nonprofit private Christian school affiliated with Shady Acres Church of Christ, shares that church's building, and runs on tuition, fundraisers and donations rather than government or church funding. It includes a preschool. As a private school it does not write IEPs, so ask how teachers handle accommodations for attention, reading or behavior needs.
How does MOScholars work for Sikeston families?
MOScholars gives scholarships funded by donations that earn Missouri tax credits, awarded through nonprofit Educational Assistance Organizations. A Missouri student qualifies with an IEP developed under federal special education law and dated within 36 months of the application, or through household income at or below 300% of the free and reduced lunch standard plus one more condition, such as a full semester in a public school during the past 12 months or being eligible to start kindergarten or first grade. Awards are based on the state adequacy target.
How do I get my child evaluated by Sikeston R-6?
Sikeston R-6's Special Services office, staffed by a special education coordinator and psychological examiners, posts a parent referral form; fill it out or write your own dated request. Missouri rules give the district no more than 30 days to decide whether it suspects a disability, and then 60 calendar days after your consent to finish the evaluation and decide eligibility, with documented breaks like summer allowed. For children 3 to 5, Missouri makes the district responsible for Early Childhood Special Education evaluations. Before age 3, refer your child to First Steps, Missouri's early intervention program.
Can a Sikeston child with dyslexia or ADHD get an IEP?
Yes, when the condition hurts learning enough that the child needs specialized instruction. Missouri's evaluation rules name dyslexia within specific learning disability, and ADHD usually falls under other health impairment. A child who needs only accommodations, such as extra time or a quieter test room, usually fits a Section 504 plan instead. Bring outside reports to the evaluation meeting so the team considers them.
What should I ask a Sikeston school before enrolling?
Ask who teaches students with IEPs, how many students share a classroom aide, and how the school handles a meltdown or shutdown. Ask how reading interventions work and how often you see progress data. At a private school, ask whether it accepts MOScholars funds and whether its teachers will meet with Sikeston R-6 staff if your child gets services through the district.
