Twin Sun Early Childhood Center

Listed
Wixom, MIAges 2-5Tuition-free

Twin Sun Early Childhood Center in Wixom houses the early childhood special services of Walled Lake Consolidated Schools. Families come to us for early intervention for children from birth to age 3, developmental evaluations for children ages 3 to 5, Early Childhood Special Education classrooms, and preschool speech services. Our ECSE program serves children ages 3 to 5 who have developmental delays. Classes meet four days a week for three hours a day and run much like a typical preschool, with activities structured around the goals in each child's IEP. Each classroom is led by a special education teacher trained in early childhood development, and the district provides daily transportation from home to school. We use a transdisciplinary approach. Occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists, paraeducators and teachers work together, and all staff help children practice each of their IEP goals. Because children practice skills with many adults in different parts of the day, they learn to use those skills across settings.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Wixom

Is there a special education school in Wixom, MI?
Twin Sun Early Childhood Center is the closest thing to one. It is home to Walled Lake Consolidated Schools' early childhood special services, so a Wixom family with a baby, toddler or preschooler who has delays often ends up there. After age five, Walled Lake serves students with disabilities who live in the district through IEPs and Section 504 plans managed by its Special Services department.
What services does Twin Sun Early Childhood Center offer?
Twin Sun runs four programs. Early Intervention serves children from birth to age three. Early Childhood Evaluation assesses children ages three to five, and Early Childhood Special Education and Preschool Speech serve the same age group. If your child is under three, you can also start with Early On, Michigan's system for infants and toddlers with delays or disabilities, at 1-800-327-5966.
What is the Twin Sun preschool special education classroom like?
Classes meet four days a week for three hours a day and run much like a typical preschool, with activities built around each child's IEP goals. Every room has a special education teacher trained in early childhood, and occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language pathologists and paraeducators all work on every goal together. The district provides daily transportation from home, and placement depends on your home school.
Where do autistic children in Wixom go to school?
Most attend Walled Lake schools with an IEP. A young autistic child with delays often starts at Twin Sun, where speech, occupational therapy and classroom teaching happen in one place. For school-age students, ask Special Services which classroom setting matches your child's communication, sensory and behavior needs. Neither listing on this page is a private autism school.
Can a Wixom child with dyslexia or ADHD get school support?
Yes. Federal special education rules place dyslexia under specific learning disability and usually place ADHD under other health impairment, so either can lead to an IEP when your child needs specialized instruction. Walled Lake also writes Section 504 plans, and its Assistant Superintendent of Special Services serves as the district 504 coordinator. Ask the team how reading instruction and attention supports will be measured each grading period.
What is the Center for Performance Arts and Learning in Wixom?
Cen4PAL is a performing and visual arts studio on Beck Road, not a school. It offers more than 50 classes in aerial arts, art, dance, language, music and voice, and theatre, plus tot classes for the youngest students. Private one-on-one music and voice lessons are available for all ages. Its site does not describe a special needs program, so ask about class size and how instructors adapt for your child.
Does Michigan offer a voucher or ESA for Wixom families?
No. Article VIII, section 2 of the Michigan Constitution blocks public money for nonpublic schools, and its text names tuition vouchers, tax benefits, deductions, subsidies and grants that would support a student's attendance. That bar rules out a state voucher or savings account for a Wixom family choosing a private school, so tuition is a family expense. Special education through Walled Lake, at Twin Sun or any district building, costs nothing.
How do I request a special education evaluation in Wixom?
For a child ages three to five, contact Twin Sun about an Early Childhood Evaluation. For a school-age child, send a dated written request to your principal or to Walled Lake Special Services at 850 Ladd Road, Building D, in Walled Lake, and keep a copy. If you later need copies of special education or 504 records, the district requires a written request with a valid photo ID.
