About WAY Michigan
WAY Michigan is a tuition-free online public charter school, founded in 2014, that enrolls students in grades 6 to 12 from anywhere in Michigan. Central Michigan University authorizes our school, and the nonprofit WAY (Widening Advancements for Youth) network manages it. We are nationally accredited through AdvancED.
Students learn through project-based, competency-based courses built by certified teachers on the Centric platform, moving ahead as they master each standard. Projects tackle real problems, such as designing warming packs for stray cat shelters or comparing cell phone plans to learn functions. Students set their own weekly schedule, live online sessions average 5 to 10 students, and a mentor checks in with each student daily. We provide a laptop and internet connection when a family needs them.
Our special education team includes special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, social workers, psychologists, occupational and physical therapists and paraprofessionals, and we build IEPs together with families. A pre-referral process puts accommodations in place before a special education evaluation.
