Eton Academy started in 1980 as the Adventure School, a tutorial program for children with learning disabilities, and became a full-curriculum independent school in 1986. Today about 220 students in grades K through 12 attend our Lower, Middle and Upper Schools on one campus in Birmingham. We teach students who learn differently, including children with ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, executive functioning challenges and mild autism. Classes have no more than 10 students, and learning specialists add support as needed. Our instructional system, the Eton Approach, uses multi-sensory, neurodevelopmental methods in a literacy-focused curriculum. Each student has a learning portfolio and three to six learning goals that teachers and directors review weekly, plus a teacher advisor who works with seven to 10 advisees. Students use assistive technology, and our College and Life Prep Office runs a life prep curriculum from grade 1, ACT and SAT preparation and mini-internships. Students also take art, music and physical education, compete in fall, winter and spring athletics, and join clubs. We offer before and after care and summer learning programs for each division. We are accredited by NCA and ISACS, and need-based tuition assistance is available.
