White Oak School

White Oak School opened in 1990 as a college-preparatory day school for bright students in grades 1 to 12 whose learning disabilities make reading, writing, spelling, or math hard. Today we enroll about 60 students on a 40-acre campus in Westfield with athletic fields, woods, and meadows. We are approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and most students come to us through their district IEP team.

Classes never exceed eight students, and all instruction is language-based, covering science, math, history, language arts, and oral expression. Every student also has a 50-minute one-to-one tutorial each day focused on literacy and organization. Our speech-language pathologists consult with teachers, support oral expression classes, and provide individual therapy when a student needs it. We serve students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, processing disorders, nonverbal learning disabilities, ADHD, and autism.

Our Studio and Shop Building hosts culinary arts, art, photography, pottery and woodworking. Students play soccer, basketball, cross-country, and ultimate frisbee in the River Valley Athletic League, join drama and chorus and go hiking, kayaking, and camping through outdoor education. A career counselor guides older students through college and transition planning.
