Hopeful Journeys Educational Center, our Beverly school on Tozer Road, educates children and young adults ages 3 to 22 with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities who need a highly structured, individualized setting all day. Everything we teach is grounded in Applied Behavior Analysis, and we run a 216-day school year so skills stay consistent. Referrals come from districts, parents, agencies and clinicians. Teaching methods include discrete trial training, task analysis, video modeling, errorless learning, data-driven behavior plans, feeding programs and social skills training. We draw on the Autism Curriculum Encyclopedia, tied to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, plus direct instruction programs such as Edmark, Reading Milestones and Touch Math. Speech-language pathologists and BCBAs build communication goals using speech, sign language or assistive technology, and our occupational and physical therapists set motor goals. Our building holds three PE rooms, an art and music room, computer labs, a library, a teen clubhouse and four outdoor play areas. Working-age students train in our vocational kitchen, school store and recycling program, and at local businesses such as a pizzeria, a thrift shop and an animal rescue.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Beverly

Is there a school in Beverly, MA for neurodiverse students?
Beverly's public option is a continuum rather than one building: inclusion classrooms, specialized classes inside district schools, and, through the IEP Team, programs run by the Northshore Education Consortium. Separate private special education schools also serve the area; DESE publishes the list it approves. Ask the Team which setting the evaluation supports before applying anywhere, because only a Team placement is publicly funded.
How do Beverly families compare autism programs?
Start with what the IEP says your child needs: specialized instruction, speech and occupational therapy, behavior support. Then ask each program how it teaches communication, how often a behavior analyst reviews data, the adult-to-student ratio, and time with typically developing peers. For a school outside the district, check whether it appears on DESE's approved special education school list.
What help exists for dyslexia and ADHD in Beverly?
Massachusetts requires reading screening in kindergarten through at least grade 3 at least twice a year with a DESE-approved tool, with parents told within 30 school days when a child falls significantly below benchmark. Beverly Middle School runs reading intervention and classes for language-based disabilities. For ADHD, Beverly notes that identifying a disability is not a medical diagnosis and a disability alone does not make a student eligible; the Team decides whether specialized instruction is needed.
Private, charter or public: how do services work in Beverly?
Public and charter schools are free; a charter school runs special education for its own students until a Team decides an out-of-district placement is needed. If you pay for private school, Beverly still evaluates a resident child, writes an IEP if eligible, and provides the services at a public or neutral site rather than at the private school when state or local funds pay for them.
Can I get public money for private school tuition in Massachusetts?
Do not count on a voucher or education savings account: the Anti-Aid Amendment to the Massachusetts Constitution bars public money for aiding non-public primary and secondary schools. The exception runs through special education law: when the Beverly Team places a student in a DESE-approved day or residential school, the district pays. Statewide options: Massachusetts special needs schools.
What should I ask when I visit a school?
Ask which staff are licensed special educators, how large classes are, and which therapies are delivered in the building rather than by referral. Ask how the school responds to dysregulation and whether it uses restraint or seclusion. Ask how progress on IEP goals is measured and reported, and for a teenager, what vocational and transition work begins in high school.
How do I request an evaluation from Beverly Public Schools?
Send a written request to the Special Education office describing your concerns and any outside evaluations. Massachusetts rules require the district to send a consent form within five school days, finish assessments within 30 school days of your consent, and hold the Team meeting within 45 school working days. Outside reports help, but a diagnosis alone does not settle eligibility.
How does preschool screening at McKeown work?
Early Childhood Screening is the route into McKeown Preschool's peer-participation slots for typically developing children. It is not a special education evaluation. If you think your child may need an IEP, request an evaluation from the Special Education Department instead. Children under 3 go through Massachusetts Early Intervention, which the Department of Public Health runs through local programs; anyone can refer.
