The Foundation Learning Center

The Foundation Learning Center opened in 2019 as the Landover campus of The Foundation Schools, a Maryland nonprofit that has taught students with emotional and learning challenges since 1975. Our campus is built for students with autism spectrum disorder who also have developmental delays, social skills needs and communication goals, and it runs as a 12-month program.

We serve grades K to 12. Elementary and middle school students take subject courses that meet their home districts' requirements under the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards, while our high school program centers on life skills that prepare students for independent living. Classroom practice draws on Applied Behavior Analysis, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, social skills training and counseling, with technology built into daily lessons. Speech-language services, occupational therapy and dedicated aides are provided when a student's IEP calls for them, and consulting psychiatrists can work with parents.

Students join us through an IEP placement made with their local school system, which also sets up transportation. Two education agencies approve our program: the Maryland State Department of Education and the District of Columbia's Office of the State Superintendent of Education.
