MAX Charter School

Listed
Thibodaux, LAGrades K-8

At MAX Charter School, we teach students in Grades 1–8 who have dyslexia, characteristics of dyslexia, or a related learning disorder such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. Our tuition-free Type 2 public charter school is approved by Louisiana’s Board of Elementary and Secondary Education and is located on the Nicholls State University campus in Thibodaux. Students learn in small groups, where teachers can differentiate instruction and respond to individual learning needs. Our multisensory programs support students with dyslexia and language-related learning differences. Faculty receive training in Language Science and Project Read, and we continue staff development in those approaches. Families who are considering MAX can ask how instruction and support are planned for a student’s specific learning profile. Learning at MAX includes more than classroom academics. Students take part in character building, art, music, drama, and physical fitness as part of the school’s broader program. We are a nonprofit, coeducational school, and our programs are designed around the needs of the students we serve rather than a single approach for everyone. Our admissions process includes an application and lottery, and the school currently maintains grade-level waitlists. A waitlist does not carry over automatically to the next school year, so families need to reapply if they remain interested. MAX is at 100 Afton Drive, between Family Housing and Babington Hall on the Nicholls campus. We welcome questions about eligibility, the application process, and whether our Grades 1–8 program may fit a child with dyslexia or a related learning disorder.

Virtual Academy of Lafourche Site B

Listed
Thibodaux, LAGrades K-12Tuition-free

Virtual Academy of Lafourche opened in 2012 to give Lafourche Parish students in kindergarten through 12th grade a blended option. Lessons are completed partly online and partly onsite at an assigned VAL site, where a certified Educational Consultant works with each student on academic work, and parents and guardians provide support at home. Our Thibodaux site has separate site managers for grades K to 4, 5 to 8, and 9 to 12. Students also receive the services found in traditional schools, including tutoring, student health services, computer support, and counseling, and we have a designated 504 coordinator. High school students get guidance on Louisiana TOPS scholarship course requirements, can apply for dual enrollment through Fletcher and NSU, and can recover credits and grades through Acellus and Edgenuity.

Comparing school options in Thibodaux

Lafourche Parish School District runs special education evaluations from its Pupil Appraisal Center at 110 Bowie Road in Thibodaux, (985) 447-8181. The district's Department of Student Support Services includes a special education director, a coordinator for early childhood special education and Child Search, a 504 coordinator, and a related services coordinator.

In Louisiana, a school-age concern usually starts with the School Building Level Committee (SBLC), a general education team that includes at least the principal or a designee, a classroom teacher, and the referring teacher. Parents are invited. The SBLC reviews screening and intervention data and can continue interventions, refer for a Section 504 evaluation, or refer your child to pupil appraisal for an individual evaluation when an exceptionality is suspected.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Thibodaux

How long does pupil appraisal have to finish an evaluation?
Louisiana's Bulletin 1508 requires the initial evaluation within 60 business days of receiving your consent. If fewer than 60 business days remain in the school year, the district may take an end-of-year extension with your permission. The days used before June 1 count, and the clock restarts on September 1. Our guide on how to request an evaluation covers the first step.
Who serves Lafourche Parish babies and toddlers?
EarlySteps, run by the Louisiana Department of Health, serves children from birth through age 3 (35 months) who have a developmental delay or a medical condition likely to cause one. Anyone can make a referral by contacting the System Point of Entry for your region. Delays can be in cognitive, motor, vision, hearing, communication, social-emotional, or adaptive development. See our early intervention guide.
Will I get updates while my child is in SBLC interventions?
Yes. The SBLC must give you a report or summary of your child's response to interventions, including repeated measures of achievement, at least once each grading period until the committee reaches a decision. Keep those reports. They show whether interventions are working and support a referral if they are not. Our IEP prep checklist helps you organize them.
What if I disagree with the SBLC's decision?
If you disagree with the SBLC's actions or decision, the school must give you a copy of your rights, which include the right to request an evaluation. If the SBLC decides to refer your child for an initial evaluation, a pupil appraisal team member must be present to review the supporting documents. Put your evaluation request in writing and date it so the timeline is clear.
