Southwest Louisiana Charter Academy

Lake Charles, LAGrades PreK-5Tuition-free

Our PreK through 3rd grade campus on East McNeese Street is part of Lake Charles Charter Academy, a tuition-free public charter school operated by the Southwest Louisiana Charter Academy Foundation and managed by Charter Schools USA. We were the second charter school in the Lake Charles area and are open to students across Southwest Louisiana, with admission through a lottery. Teachers follow the CSUSA curriculum built on state standards, and every student has a Personalized Learning Plan that tracks strengths, weaknesses and progress toward a year's worth of learning. Students study a world language, a literacy plan guides reading instruction, and special education services are coordinated on campus. New students join one of four Houses on House Sorting Day as part of our 4 Houses, 1 Family tradition. Students wear uniforms, and we offer bus transportation, a before and after care program and school meals. Our counselor provides student services and referrals.

Comparing school options in Lake Charles

Calcasieu Parish schools serve nearly 5,000 exceptional students, so a Lake Charles family looking for an autism school near them starts with a large public system before any private campus. The parish assigns program facilitators to help teachers write and carry out IEPs, and behavior facilitators to support classrooms when a student's behavior gets in the way of learning.

Calcasieu's Direct and Related Services team adds adapted physical education, occupational and physical therapy, deaf and hard of hearing staff, vision teachers and an orientation and mobility specialist. For younger children, the Office of Early Childhood Special Services works across 35 elementary schools, six Head Start sites and community childcare centers. Families leaning toward a private school can apply for a LA GATOR Scholarship, Louisiana's education scholarship account, and students with disabilities get a priority place in line.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Lake Charles

How do I find autism schools near me in Lake Charles?
Start by asking Calcasieu Parish which settings it offers an autistic child at your zoned school, from general classes with support to smaller special education rooms, and whether a behavior facilitator consults on the plan. Then visit private programs. Compare how each school handles communication, sensory needs and transitions, and ask how many autistic students it serves now.
How do Calcasieu schools screen for dyslexia and help with ADHD?
Louisiana requires a universal literacy screener for kindergarten through third grade three times a year, and a dyslexia screener late in kindergarten or at any grade when a parent asks. A school committee decides next steps, which can include a 504 plan or a referral for evaluation. ADHD can qualify for an IEP under Other Health Impairment.
Public, charter or private: what changes for a child with an IEP?
Public and charter schools deliver the IEP at no cost, and charter students keep every federal special education right. A private school charges tuition and does not have to follow the IEP. When a parent places a child privately, Calcasieu may offer a services plan, but the child has no individual right to the full IEP. Get each private school's support promises in writing.
How does the LA GATOR Scholarship work for Lake Charles students with disabilities?
LA GATOR gives eligible families an education scholarship account for tuition and other approved costs. Current participants come first, then students with a disability under IDEA or from lower-income families. A valid evaluation or IEP from a public school system proves the disability, and funding depends on yearly legislative appropriation. Using LA GATOR at a participating school counts as a parental placement.
What should I ask on a Lake Charles school visit?
Ask who on staff has autism or behavior training, how many students share a room, and which therapies happen on campus during the day. Ask how the school prevents meltdowns and what happens after one. Ask how often you get written updates on IEP goals, and whether you can observe a class before enrolling.
How do I get my child evaluated in Calcasieu Parish?
Put your concern in writing to your child's principal or the Calcasieu Department of Special Services and ask for an evaluation. Federal Child Find rules require the parish to evaluate children it suspects have a disability, and Calcasieu has its own Pupil Appraisal department. For a child in Head Start or community childcare, ask staff there how to reach the Office of Early Childhood Special Services. Bring any medical or therapy reports.
What help does Calcasieu offer preschoolers with delays?
The Office of Early Childhood Special Services provides early intervention, special education and related services to eligible toddlers and young children with developmental delays or disabilities. It works with families, trains teachers and offers timely behavior support, and it serves children where they already spend the day, including Head Start and community childcare.
Does Calcasieu Parish help with challenging behavior at school?
Yes. Calcasieu behavior facilitators support teachers when a student with a disability shows significant behavior. Their work can include classroom management training, behavior goals and plans, crisis plans and social skills instruction. If behavior keeps your child out of class, ask the IEP team to request a behavior facilitator and a written behavior plan.
