About MidCity High School

MidCity is the choice high school of the Davenport Community School District, built as an alternative to the traditional model of high school. Students apply to attend, and many come to us after struggling with attendance, credits or other risk factors at a larger school.

What makes the difference here is size. We keep class sizes small and our overall student population small, and we staff the building with additional support staff. Courses follow a competency-based education model, so students show mastery of each skill rather than simply logging seat time, and teachers weave life skills and self-advocacy into lessons. Technology is built into our building and classes.

Students, staff and parents each sign collective commitments that set expectations for attendance, effort and respect. Through the district, students have access to special education services, 504 plans, English learner support, talented and gifted programming and online learning. Student projects range from baking to art exhibitions and career exploration.

Wood Middle School

Davenport, IA
Learning differences Twice-exceptional Public school

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports guide our work with students at Wood Middle School in Davenport. We use this approach alongside classroom teaching as children meet the academic and social demands of middle school. Athletics, band and choir offer other ways for students to participate, develop interests and spend time in the school community. Our North Division Street campus connects families with their child's teachers and school team. The Wood Parent Hub, PTO and weekly updates give parents ways to stay involved in school life. We also share schedules and registration resources, together with health, meal and transportation information. Those practical resources accompany the classroom and activity programs throughout the year. When a student needs learning support, Davenport Community School District uses screening, targeted instruction and progress monitoring to guide interventions. Students who qualify for special education receive an individualized education program. Parents, caregivers, teachers and administrators contribute to that plan, considering the student's academic, social and emotional needs together.
