Lake ESSC High School

Granite City, ILGrades 6-12

A pumpkin drop with the Granite City Fire Department brings community partners into school life at Lake Educational Support Services Center. Our annual college and career fair creates another connection, with local businesses meeting students as they consider education and work beyond school. A STEM and computer lab offers an additional setting for their learning. We teach students in person from fifth through twelfth grade. Staff welcome them, set goals and expectations, and work over time to earn their trust. Learning and managing emotions form part of that relationship-based approach as students work toward their goals. Families and the Granite City school community participate alongside us as students continue their education and prepare for graduation. Lake also hosts summer school for kindergarten through seventh grade. Our staff support those younger learners during the summer, maintaining the same attention to relationships and participation while they take part in the program. The school-year and summer offerings serve different grade groups within our work with the local school community.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Granite City

What is a case study evaluation in Granite City?
It is the district's term for the evaluation that decides special education eligibility. You must consent before it starts, you have the right to a report of the results, and you can attend any meeting to determine eligibility. Illinois then allows 60 school days from consent to hold the eligibility and IEP meetings. Our IEP prep checklist helps you prepare.
What is Partnership for Kids?
It is a Birth to 3 Prevention Initiative program at Prather, where parent educators provide intensive case management and support on infant and toddler development. Call 618-451-5823, option 2, for details. If you suspect a developmental delay before age 3, our early intervention guide explains how Part C services and referrals work.
Can my child get homebound instruction?
A child with a temporary physical or health impairment that a physician expects will cause at least ten days of absence may qualify for homebound or hospital instruction. Contact the Director of Special Education to discuss the steps. Students who do not qualify under IDEA may still qualify under Section 504. Compare the two in our 504 plan vs. IEP guide.
What if I disagree with the district?
Granite City refers complaints about special education rights to the Director of Special Education, who works with parents and the building principal to resolve them. If that does not work, parents can request mediation or a due process hearing. The procedural safeguards notice, given at least once a year, explains each option.
