The Winston Knolls School

The School of Expressive Arts and Learning serves Elgin students from kindergarten through age 22 in a therapeutic educational setting where personal, emotional, and social growth carry as much weight as academics. Classes are self-contained and follow a standard curriculum, grouped into primary, intermediate, junior high, and high school levels, with vocational and transition services for older students. Expressive therapy runs through the program: board-certified music therapists work with rhythm, songwriting, lyric analysis, and relaxation; art therapy opens a nonverbal route to self-expression through drawing, painting, and sculpture; and recreation therapy builds teamwork, coping skills, and peer connection through physical and leisure activities. Each student's functioning is assessed at enrollment, and the setting is designed to encourage positive risk-taking and build self-esteem.

Black Bear Academy is an esteemed therapeutic day school and clinical pediatric practice located in Chicago's Lakeview/North Center neighborhood. Founded in 2003, Black Bear Academy provides intensive therapeutic education and early intervention for children ages 18 months through 10 years with speech-language delays, developmental delays, autism spectrum disorder, and sensory motor challenges. With low 3:1 classroom ratios, the academy bridges the gap between clinical therapy and academic schooling by integrating speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, behavioral therapy, and academic instruction into a cohesive daily schedule. Black Bear Academy prepares young learners for long-term academic success through structured early childhood, therapeutic kindergarten, and lower elementary classrooms.
