South Florida Autism Charter School serves only students with autism spectrum disorder, and our classrooms keep a ratio of three students to each teacher. Our main campus in Hialeah on West 108th Street teaches kindergarten through 12th grade, and we also run a South Dade campus and a Country Club campus. We are an open-enrollment, tuition-free public charter school sponsored by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, with about 285 students enrolled. Students qualify with an ASD diagnosis, a public school IEP for autism services, and a modified curriculum, along with behavioral difficulties, communication deficits or a need for self-care training. Instruction applies Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Verbal Behavior (VB) alongside state standards, so each student has an individualized program. Many students arrive without a reliable way to communicate, and they learn to make requests with their voice, sign language, picture systems or augmentative devices. School life includes basketball with the Sunrays, the Sun Dazzlers dance team, Key Club, a media club and student government, plus dances throughout the year. Families do not need a McKay or other scholarship to enroll, and free and reduced-price lunch is available through the district.

Instruction applies Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Verbal Behavior alongside state standards. Many students arrive without a reliable way to communicate, so teachers build requesting skills through speech, sign language, picture systems and augmentative devices. Behavior plans replace aggression, elopement and self-injury with appropriate requests, and self-help lessons cover toileting, hand washing, tooth brushing and feeding. Student life is busy: the Sunrays basketball team, the Sun Dazzlers dance team, a Media Club, Student Government and a Key Club, plus more than 15 dances a year. We were the first autism-focused school to take students on a plane. Miami-Dade County Public Schools sponsors our open-enrollment charter, and families do not need a McKay Scholarship to attend.
