Connecticut Friends School

Listed
Wilton, CTAges 2-5

Since 1957, Connecticut Friends School has run a play-based preschool under the care of Wilton Friends Meeting (Quakers). We sit on a five-acre wooded campus on New Canaan Road (Route 106) in Wilton, and outdoor play is a priority every day on a playground with sensory tables, building blocks, a sandbox, swings and a wooden climbing playscape. Children are grouped by age: Willows for two-year-olds, Spruces for threes, Oaks for fours and Maples for fives, plus a summer camp for ages 3 to 5. In the Friends tradition, our curriculum emphasizes social-emotional skills, community building, peaceful conflict resolution and problem-solving. Language, early math and critical thinking grow through dramatic play, manipulatives, open art, sensory work, reading, music and time in nature, and teachers shape projects around each group of children. Regular enrichment classes include music and movement, mindfulness with certified leaders, and story time with the Wilton Library children's librarian, along with visits from firefighters, artists and African drummers. Parents are welcome to volunteer in classrooms and join schoolwide events. We welcome families of every race, family structure, background and faith.

Comparing school options in Wilton

Wilton Public Schools runs its integrated preschool at the Miller-Driscoll Early Learning Center, where children with and without special education needs learn together. For developmental concerns from birth to 2 years 9 months, the district refers families to Connecticut's Birth to Three System at 800-505-7000. From 2 years 9 months on, families contact the Early Learning Center.

For school-age students, Wilton uses Connecticut's Planning and Placement Team process. Teachers often try general education interventions first through the school's SRBI team, but a parent can ask for a referral at any time by writing to the teacher or principal. Date the letter and keep a copy. The first meeting, called PPT 1, reviews the reasons for the referral and decides whether to evaluate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Wilton

What is the Miller-Driscoll Early Learning Center?
It is Wilton's integrated preschool program. Children with age-typical skills and children with identified special education needs learn together, with a curriculum based on Connecticut's Early Learning and Development Standards. If your child is 2 years 9 months or older and you have concerns, the Early Learning Center is the district contact.
How do I make a referral for a Wilton student?
Write a letter to your child's teacher or principal asking for a referral to the Planning and Placement Team. Date it and keep a copy. You may also ask verbally, and the principal or a designee will help. The team then meets at PPT 1 to review the reasons and decide whether to evaluate.
Does my child have to go through SRBI first?
Not if you request a referral. Wilton uses its Scientifically Research-Based Intervention team to support struggling students in general education, and that team can request a PPT. Connecticut's state manual says a referral to special education may be made at any time, wherever a student is in the intervention process. Our 504 vs. IEP guide may also help.
Will I be told if a teacher refers my child?
Yes. When school staff make the referral, parents should receive written notice within five days. Before any initial evaluation, the district must get your informed written consent. The evaluation must be full and individual, using several tools and including information you provide about your child.
