Halcyon School is the day program of the Boulder Valley School District, serving students from the elementary grades through age 21 whose social-emotional and mental health needs call for a more supportive setting. Students keep a concurrent enrollment at their home school and work with our staff toward a return to a less restrictive environment. Temple Grandin School opened in Boulder in 2011 for neurodivergent middle and high school students. Dr. Temple Grandin granted permission for us to use her name, though she is not involved in daily operations. Students with autism and ADHD are a particularly good fit for our socio-academic program, which gives social learning the same weight as academics. Everything from how we start the day with Morning Meeting to the topics students study is planned with neurodivergent learners in mind. Students learn about neurodiversity and how it applies to them, and they build friendships with like-minded peers and adults who appreciate how they think. Admissions are rolling, and students may apply any time until the start of the fourth quarter. Families tour the campus, submit an application with recent diagnostic, educational or neuropsychological reports and two teacher recommendations, and the student spends three days visiting classes. The Joshua School began with six Denver-area teachers who lost a beloved student named Joshua in 2002 and set out to build a school where every day would be meaningful for children with developmental disabilities. We opened in Englewood in 2005 and added our Boulder campus on Harvest Road in 2012. We serve students with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities, and our Boulder program enrolls students across multiple ages and grade levels. Boulder uses a collaborative care model, so students receive occupational therapy, speech-language therapy, applied behavior analysis and mental health services as part of the school day. Lessons extend into town, with walks to a local duck pond, visits to climbing gyms and vocational training with community partners such as a local coffee shop, where students have learned barista skills. Each campus is licensed by the Colorado Department of Education as a facility school and by the Colorado Department of Human Services as a day treatment facility. Colorado public school districts refer students whose IEP calls for a separate setting, and the referring district contracts with us and pays tuition.
