St. Helen Catholic School

South Gate, CAGrades PreK-8

In September 1941, eight Sisters of Notre Dame opened St. Helen School by teaching 368 students inside the original St. Helen Church in South Gate, because wartime shortages delayed the new building until that December. Since then more than 6,300 students have passed through our classrooms. Today we are a parish school of St. Helen Church under the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, enrolling children from preschool at age 3 through 8th grade. Our youngest Bruins start in a licensed, full-day Pre-K with a play-based curriculum, daily prayers and an afternoon nap, then move into a full-day transitional kindergarten focused on reading, writing and math readiness. Kindergarten has a full-time teacher with a half-day aide, follows Common Core and NGSS, and pairs each child with an 8th-grade buddy for weekly Mass. Students in kindergarten through 8th grade study religion, math, language arts, social studies, science, physical education, art, music and technology, in classes averaging 25 students with iPads and projectors in every room. Daily after-school tutoring and enrichment give extra help or extra challenge. Many families receive reduced tuition, and admission gives preference to St. Helen parishioners.

Comparing school options in South Gate

South Gate Senior High, on Firestone Boulevard, is a Los Angeles Unified school, and LAUSD's Child Find process sorts families by age. For a preschooler starting at 2 years 10 months, call LAUSD's Early Childhood Special Education office at 213-241-4713. For TK and older, start with the principal at your public school of residence.

LAUSD requires every special education evaluation request to be in writing, and staff can help if you cannot write one. For school-age children, the principal may refer your child to a Student Support and Progress Team, which reviews progress and proposes interventions. LAUSD's Child Find covers children from birth to 22 who live in the district, plus children in private schools and homeschools located inside LAUSD boundaries. Assessment and services are provided at no cost to families.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in South Gate

My South Gate child goes to a private school. Who evaluates?
LAUSD says the district of residence handles Child Find for students in private schools, under an agreement among Los Angeles County SELPAs. If you live in LAUSD, send the written request to your public school of residence. Parents can also contact LAUSD's Parentally Placed Private School Office for eligibility purposes, regardless of where they live.
What preschool special education options does LAUSD offer?
LAUSD's Early Childhood Special Education programs serve children up to age five, from inclusive options such as the PreK Itinerant Teacher, who supports children in general preschool and TK settings, to self-contained classes. ECSE also assesses preschool-age children not enrolled in an LAUSD program, including referrals from families, doctors, and early learning providers. The IEP team decides the setting.
What is a Student Support and Progress Team?
An SSPT includes general education staff and may include special education staff. It reviews your child's progress, identifies possible areas of need, proposes interventions within general education, and writes an action plan. Parents may still refer a child for assessment in writing. Our guide on how to request a special education evaluation explains the steps.
Who handles infants in South Gate?
LAUSD directs families of children under 2 years 10 months to the regional centers. The state Early Start directory lists South Gate in the service area of South Central Los Angeles Regional Center, with Early Start intake at (213) 744-8807 and the McClaney Family Resource Center at (213) 744-8882. Our early intervention guide explains Early Start.
