Comparing school options in Santa Paula

Santa Paula Unified School District belongs to the Ventura County SELPA, a regional consortium that includes every public school district in Ventura County, Las Virgenes Unified, and schools run by the Ventura County Office of Education. Santa Paula Unified points families to the SELPA's parent guide for the basics of eligibility, the IEP process, and the least restrictive environment.

The starting point depends on age. Before a child's third birthday, the Ventura County SELPA directs referrals to Tri-Counties Regional Center at 800-664-3177. From age three, families contact the school district where they live. For a school-age child, the SELPA advises a written request that names your concerns, signed and dated, handed to the principal or school psychologist. SELPA staff answer general questions at 805-437-1560.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Santa Paula

Where do I start if my baby or toddler seems delayed?
For a child under three who lives in Ventura County, the Ventura County SELPA directs families to Tri-Counties Regional Center at 800-664-3177. After the third birthday, the referral goes to the school district you live in, which for families inside its boundaries is Santa Paula Unified. Our early intervention guide explains the move from infant services to preschool special education.
How do I ask for an assessment of my school-age child?
The Ventura County SELPA advises putting the request in writing and naming each area of concern. Sign and date the letter, then give it to school staff; the SELPA suggests the principal or school psychologist. Keep a copy. California requires the district to give you a proposed assessment plan within 15 days of the referral, with your parent rights attached.
What does the Ventura County SELPA offer families?
The SELPA is a regional consortium that shares one Special Education Local Plan across its member districts. Its family pages cover the IEP, parent rights, dispute prevention, early childhood, and transition to adult life. Its Community Advisory Committee of families, school staff, and agency representatives meets quarterly on the first Monday of the month from 4 to 6 p.m., currently by Zoom.
Is there help for teens preparing for work after high school?
Santa Paula Unified's special education page links to California Department of Rehabilitation student services. It states that students ages 16 to 21 who have been identified as having a disability are eligible, and it links the application. Bring work and training goals to the IEP meeting too, since transition planning is part of the IEP. Our IEP guide explains how.
