Lea's Christian School was founded in 1978 as a nondenominational Christian school in San Lorenzo, with easy access from the 880 freeway and Hesperian Boulevard. Students attend chapel, and weekly offerings, food and toy drives and global outreach projects put the school's emphasis on "love one another" into practice. Our preschool, licensed by the state for 45 children, offers a part-time morning program on the school-year calendar and full-time care from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. year round. Comparing school options in San Lorenzo

San Lorenzo Unified is one of four districts in the Mid-Alameda County SELPA, alongside Hayward, Castro Valley, and San Leandro unified districts. The SELPA is responsible for making sure students have full educational opportunity regardless of which member district they live in. If you live in San Lorenzo Unified, your child's evaluation and IEP come from that district.

San Lorenzo Unified describes special education as specially designed instruction for students whose goals cannot be met through changes to the general program, provided at no cost to families. Students ages 3 through 22 may qualify under one of the federally defined disability categories. The district's Child Find process starts with a review of available information, and if screening points to a possible disability, the child is assessed in the areas of concern. No single procedure can decide a child's program.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in San Lorenzo

How does an evaluation start in San Lorenzo Unified?
The district first reviews available information about your child. If screening shows a possible educational disability, staff propose an assessment plan describing the tests for each area of suspected disability. After you receive your rights and give written consent, specialists assess your child with your input. If results show a disability and a need for services, the team develops an IEP.
How long can the district take to send an assessment plan?
Under California Education Code 56043, a district has 15 calendar days from receiving a referral to develop a proposed assessment plan. Days between school terms and vacations longer than five schooldays do not count. You get at least 15 days to review it. After you consent, the IEP meeting must happen within 60 days.
Does San Lorenzo Unified serve students up to age 22?
Yes. San Lorenzo Unified says students ages 3 through 22 may be eligible if they have one of the federally defined disabling conditions and it adversely affects their educational performance. Categories include autism, hearing impairment, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, and others. The IEP team decides eligibility after assessment. Our IEP guide explains that meeting.
Can I ask for a meeting to change my child's IEP?
Yes. California Education Code 56043 says an IEP meeting requested in writing by a parent must be held within 30 calendar days of the request, not counting breaks between sessions or vacations longer than five schooldays. Write down what you want the team to review. Our IEP prep checklist helps you prepare your questions.
