Chaparral High School - Phelan

Phelan Elementary School has reached Platinum implementation status for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) four times in a row. Our schoolwide expectations are the ABCs: Acting respectfully, Being responsible and Creating a safe environment, and students practice them every day. We are part of Snowline Joint Unified School District, and our students are the Phelan Falcons. When behavior breaks those expectations, we use restorative practices to repair harm. Students learn emotional regulation through daily social emotional learning, and mindfulness is taught and practiced every day as another tool they can use in and out of school. Our Falcon Center is the school counseling office, where families can get help and connect with resources such as the Desert Mountain SELPA and Desert Mountain Children's Center for child and family support. After school, the ASES program gives students a supervised place to stay, and our parent group, P.T.S.T., supports school events. Students who need a bus can ride district transportation.

Piñon Mesa Middle School sits on Sheep Creek Road in Phelan and is part of the Snowline Joint Unified School District. Students can earn Mesa Money for activities through our Renaissance Program, and Saturday Academy sessions run on scheduled dates through the year. Clubs meet before and after school, including a morning Coding Club, Theater Club, Game Club and Ceramics Club, and students can play on school sports teams. Our library serves students during the school day, and counseling and dean's offices support students. Families can find resources for supporting learning at home, and the district's SOAR Resource Center hosts parent engagement sessions for Snowline families.

Completed assignments carry a time value that our teachers use to determine attendance at Snowline Academy. Students work on lessons for four to six hours a day, five days a week, and parents supervise during regular school hours. Our homeschool and online arrangement offers flexibility in coursework while keeping those expectations for participation. The online curriculum covers humanities, English, science, history and social science, mathematics and career technology. Students can use lab hours for additional help from our academy teachers. We require students to complete their own work. Parents and students sign a master agreement and maintain two-way communication with staff. Family participation also includes academic meetings, where we work through learning and progress concerns. Students remain connected to their neighborhood schools and can participate in athletics, clubs and special events. When coursework falls behind, we use a stepped reengagement process with family meetings and planning. Continued lack of participation can lead to a return to the student's home school.
