Challenger School - Ardenwood

Listed
Newark, CAGrades PreK-8Private tuition, charged at a daily rate

Challenger built our Ardenwood campus from the ground up in a quiet Newark neighborhood with easy access to I-880 and the Dumbarton Bridge. Classrooms are bright and spacious, the outdoor play areas are large, and we teach preschool through eighth grade on one site. Our day stretches from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., so families can pick half-day morning, half-day afternoon or all-day preschool, and older students can stay for extended classtime. Challenger School - Ardenwood follows the program Barbara Baker started in 1963 to teach reading with phonics. Preschoolers sound out their first words, count and add through songs, and have music, art, science, drama and motor-skills time each day. In the grades, students study reading, composition, math, history and logic, plus science, speech, literature, geography, music, art and PE, and present at Science Fair, Young Author and Speech Festival. We are an independent nonprofit school and accept no public funds. Tuition is charged at a daily rate for the days a child is enrolled, and lunch is available through Choicelunch.

Comparing school options in Newark

Newark Unified asks families of preschoolers and private school students to call its Special Education department at 510-818-4208 to start a referral, and you must prove residency before any assessment. If your child already attends a Newark Unified school, you can request an assessment for special education eligibility through the school principal.

Newark Unified belongs to the Mission Valley SELPA, a three-district partnership with Fremont Unified and New Haven Unified. Fremont Unified provides infant services for families in all three districts, and it also runs the Transition Partnership Program for older students preparing for work and adult life. For ages three to five, Newark's assessment team coordinator contacts families within 15 days of a verified enrollment packet to set up a virtual intake meeting. Preschoolers found eligible for a classroom placement attend the district's early childhood special education program at Schilling Elementary.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Newark

Who serves Newark infants and toddlers with a suspected delay?
Within the Mission Valley SELPA, Fremont Unified School District provides early intervention services for infants living in Fremont, Newark, and New Haven Unified boundaries. Alameda County's Early Start intake runs through the Regional Center of East Bay at (510) 618-6195. Call either office with your child's age and your concerns. Our early intervention guide explains Early Start services.
What happens at a Newark preschool intake meeting?
After your enrollment packet and Child Find questionnaire are verified, the assessment team coordinator contacts you within 15 days to schedule a virtual intake. At the end of that meeting, the coordinator proposes a full evaluation, a speech and language evaluation, or no assessment for now. You must sign the assessment plan before the district can begin testing.
What documents does Newark Unified need for a preschool referral?
The district asks for one proof of residency, such as a lease, mortgage statement, property tax statement, or current utility bill, plus proof of birthdate and current immunization records. Missing vaccinations pause the process: the assessment team coordinator will not begin the assessment until they are complete. Bring the packet to the Special Education Office or send it by email.
How fast must Newark Unified respond to a written assessment request?
California Education Code 56043 gives a district 15 calendar days from a referral to develop a proposed assessment plan, not counting school breaks longer than five schooldays. You then have at least 15 days to decide. Once you sign, the district has 60 days to determine eligibility and hold the IEP meeting. Our guide on how to request a special education evaluation shows what to write.
