National School District Services Center

Altus Schools South Bay is a free public charter school for students in grades 7 to 12, and our Plaza Bonita Resource Center in National City is one of our South Bay centers. We opened in 2017 as part of Altus Schools, a nonprofit network that began with the Charter School of San Diego in 1994. Our model is personalized hybrid flex learning. Each student starts with a credit audit, then works with a counselor to build a Pathways Personalized Education Plan. Students take one or two courses at a time, each lasting three to four weeks, and meet one-on-one with credentialed teachers in a quiet Resource Center. UC a-g approved courses are offered across the curriculum, along with AVID, a GATE program with individualized plans, college dual enrollment, and Character and Leadership Development classes or the California Cadet Corps. For students with disabilities, our Resource Specialists and Education Specialists work with general education teachers, contracted service providers and parents to build an individualized plan, and we provide Specialized Academic Instruction, related services and 504 plans. We are members of the El Dorado Charter SELPA.

Episcopal Community Services (ECS) is dedicated to transforming lives and strengthening communities through a comprehensive range of health and human services tailored for vulnerable populations in the San Diego region. With a mission to support over 10,500 clients and their families, ECS serves individuals facing challenges such as homelessness, mental health issues, substance use disorders, and early childhood education needs. The organization employs a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach that emphasizes wraparound services, behavioral health support, and practical parenting tools for families with disabilities. Unique programs like the Central East Regional Recovery Center exemplify ECS's commitment to holistic care; last year alone, 93% of clients experiencing homelessness achieved stable housing through this initiative. ECS stands out not only for its impactful programs but also for its low client-to-staff ratio and strong partnerships with families, ensuring that every individual receives personalized attention and support. Engaging community events further enhance the sense of belonging among families, making ECS a beacon of hope and resilience in the community.

National School District (NSD), located just five miles from downtown San Diego, is dedicated to serving approximately 4,000 students from preschool through sixth grade across ten elementary schools and a preschool center. Established in 1871, NSD holds the distinction of being the second-oldest district in San Diego County and is recognized for pioneering California's first free Kindergarten program. The district is committed to fostering academic excellence and student well-being while also prioritizing community engagement and environmental sustainability, as evidenced by its designation as the nation's first elementary-only Heart Safe District and a California Green Ribbon Silver Honoree.
