Live Oak Alternative Schools

Live Oak Alternative Schools, known as LOAS, has been Live Oak Unified's alternative education site since the 1980s. We exist as an intervention and a supplement to the district's regular schools, and students come to us through referrals from other sites, administrators, parents or the superintendent.

LOAS houses several programs on one campus. Valley Oak High School is a continuation high school for juniors and seniors that meets in a morning session, and our Learning Opportunity program serves students in grades 7 to 10 in the afternoon. Independent Study is scheduled around meetings among teacher, student and parent, and Home/Hospital instruction is available with a physician's referral. We are WASC accredited, and our goals center on raising English and math proficiency and giving students flexible routes to meet graduation requirements.

Our counselor runs a virtual counseling center with mindfulness tools, crisis resources and college information. Students attend college application workshops and registration days at Yuba College and Butte College, career fairs and career week, and can earn elective credit in photography. Seniors graduate at our own LOAS ceremony each June.
