Comparing school options in Fontana

Fontana Unified is its own Special Education Local Plan Area, so the district's SELPA/Special Services department handles both local services and the regional SELPA role. That department offers family trainings and Alternative Dispute Resolution, with neutral facilitators who give confidential advice on the IEP process or can facilitate an IEP meeting at a parent's request.

Because Fontana Unified operates as its own SELPA, questions about local special education policy go to the same district office that runs services. Its ADR service lets a parent ask for a facilitated IEP meeting when talks stall, before any formal complaint. The district also hosts a Special Education Community Advisory Committee for parents. Confirm which district serves your home address before you request an assessment. For children three and older, California tells families to call the district Special Education department to start.

Frequently Asked Questions About Special Needs Schools in Fontana

What is Fontana Unified's SELPA/Special Services department?
Fontana Unified runs a combined Special Education Local Plan Area and Special Services department. It supports students with disabilities and their families, offers trainings on the IEP process, and provides Alternative Dispute Resolution through neutral facilitators. Because the SELPA sits inside the district, policy and service questions go to one place. Start with your child's school for day-to-day concerns.
How can a Fontana parent get a facilitated IEP meeting?
Fontana Unified's ADR service providers are neutral facilitators who give confidential advice about the IEP process and can facilitate an IEP meeting at your request. Ask the SELPA/Special Services department how to request one. The California Department of Education also promotes ADR as a quicker, confidential alternative to formal complaints. Our IEP prep checklist helps you prepare.
Which district should I contact for an assessment in Fontana?
Contact the district that serves your home address, and confirm it with that district's enrollment office before sending records, because a mailing address alone does not identify a school district. The California Department of Education says families of children three and older should ask for the Special Education department. Submit the request in writing. See how to request a special education evaluation.
Where can I call if I need state-level special education help?
The California Department of Education's Constituent Support Services unit answers family questions at 800-926-0648, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and returns voicemails within 24 hours. CDE staff can explain rights and refer you to the right state office. For a child under three, CDE directs families to 800-515-2229 for Early Start.
