In-home providers teach skills where your child needs them, in your kitchen and during your real bedtime routine. Nobody drives anywhere. Each starts with an assessment, then builds a treatment plan around the goals your family names. A clinician reviews progress as it goes, and caregivers learn the same approach so it holds up the rest of the week.
Budding Futures ABA
Works in homes and inside schools across Colorado for ages 18 months to 18 years. A named clinical director, Rachel Blackburn, BCBA, reviews the plans. It accepts Health First Colorado plus Aetna and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, uses the VB-MAPP and ABLLS-R assessments, and reports no waitlist. In-school work still depends on the district agreeing, which no provider can promise in advance.
Achieving Stars Therapy
In-home therapy for ages 18 months to 15 years, built on a play-based approach it calls Connection over Control. It schedules from 8am to 8pm including evenings, and accepts Medicaid in every state it serves plus most commercial plans. Most families start within one to two weeks on private insurance. Medicaid takes longer because prior authorization has to clear first.
Novus Behavior Associates
The only provider checked here that names Colorado's DD and SLS waivers alongside HealthFirst Colorado Medicaid, which is useful if your child is on a waiver. It also serves adults, which almost nobody else in this list does.
Check your school district before you call anyone
This is the Littleton-specific trap, and it costs families weeks. A Littleton mailing address does not guarantee Littleton Public Schools. Addresses in the 80128, 80127 and 80123 zip codes are generally served by Jeffco Public Schools. Some addresses near 80126 fall under Douglas County School District instead. It matters because your district runs Child Find, the free evaluation process for children aged 3 and up. Calling the wrong district's office means starting over. Littleton Public Schools offers free developmental screening for children from 2 years 10 months to 5 years, on 303-347-6980. If you are not certain which district covers your street, check the district's own boundary tool before you dial.
The supervision question Littleton parents should ask
Colorado is short on the people who supervise ABA. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board lists 8,242 Registered Behavior Technicians in Colorado against 1,901 board-certified analysts. That is about 4.3 technicians per analyst. Nationally it is closer to 3.4. Technicians deliver the sessions. Analysts write the plan and check it is working. When that ratio stretches, supervision is what thins out. The Council of Autism Service Providers puts the standard of care at two hours of case supervision for every ten hours of direct therapy. Ask each provider how many hours a week a board-certified analyst spends on your child's case, and how many of those are spent watching a live session. A number is an answer. A philosophy is not.

Growth here has been steadier than in fast-rising districts elsewhere in Colorado. But autism now accounts for about 12.4 percent of Littleton's special education population, a higher share than the state average. Statewide, Colorado identified 13,837 students under the autism category in 2025 to 2026. The state publishes no autism prevalence figure of its own, having left the CDC's monitoring network in 2018, so any "Colorado autism rate" you see is national data relabelled or about a decade old. The current national figure is 1 in 31 eight-year-olds.
What Colorado actually pays for
Two widely repeated claims are wrong. ABA is not capped at age 21 by Colorado law. The autism section of Colorado's insurance statute contains no age limit at all. The "through age 21" figure comes from the older version of the law, before 2015 changes removed the caps, and it still circulates on provider pages and directories today. Health First Colorado does not require an autism diagnosis. The state answers this directly in its own guidance: a child does not need an autism diagnosis to qualify for behavioral therapy. Autism is one qualifying condition among several. Coverage runs through age 20 under the federal EPSDT rule, and every course of treatment needs prior authorization before it begins. Self-funded employer plans sit outside Colorado's insurance rules because federal law governs them. Ask your benefits administrator which kind of plan you have.

Is ABA therapy just for autism?
No. Health First Colorado covers behavioral therapy for any medically necessary condition where it is clinically appropriate, with autism listed as one example rather than a requirement. Private plans vary, so check yours.
Is Colorado a good state for autism services?
Mixed, and Littleton is one of its better spots. The south metro has an unusual concentration of providers, and several say they are accepting families now. But Colorado runs leaner on board-certified supervisors than the country as a whole, and publishes no prevalence data of its own.
How much does an hour of ABA therapy cost?
It depends on your plan far more than on the provider. With Medicaid or strong commercial coverage many Colorado families pay little or nothing. Ask each provider to verify your benefits in writing before the first session.
What are the disadvantages of ABA?
Worth taking seriously. Many autistic adults describe ABA, particularly older and more compliance-focused versions, as harmful. Modern practice is supposed to look different: following the child's lead, treating distress as communication rather than defiance, and stopping when a child withdraws agreement. Ask each provider what they do when a child refuses, and listen carefully.

Practice guidelines do not rank them. The Council of Autism Service Providers says ABA must not be restricted to particular settings and should be delivered wherever it produces the best outcome for that child. Head-to-head research isolating setting barely exists. Choose on the provider, the fit with your child, and your family's week.
